Crossing Borders and Choreographing Hope

A Performative Presentation by Jacky Lansley and Ramsay Burt

As part of – Borderlines V: Falling, Standing, Performing

The fifth annual interdisciplinary conference on performance hosted by De Montfort University's the Drama Research Group and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Dance (CIRID). Crossing Paths was an interdisciplinary research and development project directed by Jacky Lansley at the Dance Research Studio in London, which resulted in a showing of a work in progress, About Us, at the Siobhan Davies Studios in London in November 2016. Ramsay Burt (Professor of Dance History, De Montfort University) worked as Dramaturg on the project and participated in the performance. The project explored the in-between spaces of dance, theatre, live/performance art, music and film. A central concern was the physicalisation of dramatic material, with experienced performers who have the knowledge of how to emotionally embody movement. This performative presentation by Burt and Lansley will explore the ways in which the research project investigated performative strategies for blurring or crossing borders between inside/outside, private/public, and personal/political; it will reflect upon what was learnt about new ways of making connections that are interdisciplinary and interpersonal, and that are about not closing down borders and not fearing differences.

The conference took place on Thursday 22nd June 2017.
